Kayaking
Try slipping into a kayak and gliding out over the water moving with agility a few inches above the surface is a wonderful way to get a sense of Lake Superior. Grand Marais’ shoreline is part of the Lake Superior Water Trail and we have a handful of easy access locations.
East Bay The beach right off The Shoreline Inn deck is an excellent place to slip into the lake. Paddle the shoreline along the beach out to Artist Point or head east and enjoy expansive views of the Sawtooth Mountains.
Grand Marais Harbor Kayakers can take off from Cobblestone Cove Villas next to Boulder Park. Explore the harbor, then paddle out to the big lake along the breakwalls – east or west is your choice!
Cut Face Creek Visit Terrace Point next to the lovely seasonal wayside rest on Superior’s shore five miles west on Highway 61. Cut Face Creek wayside offers a picnic area, restrooms and a wide open beach to paddle from. The nearby shoreline is undeveloped and a gull rookery is located on a shallow rocky island offshore.
Paradise Beach Thirteen miles east on Highway 61 is an undeveloped expanse of cobblestone known as Paradise Beach. The flat shore is ideal for taking off and landing. Inland Lake If Superior seems too big or the wind isn’t right, you can head 10 miles north to the public landing on Devil Track Lake. The lake is primarily residential with the western end undeveloped
North Shore Expeditions offers guided kayaking trips that start between Cobblestone Cove and the Lake Superior Trading Post. . On half-day kayaking trips, we leave the harbor after a short lesson, and then paddle past rugged basalt cliffs and cobblestone beaches until we reach the Fall River. At the Fall River, we land on a beach and visit a 25-foot waterfall. When the water in the river is warm, participants can swim under the waterfall. We also offer kayaking instruction and full-day trips to Tettegouche State Park and other areas. Photo: Bryan Hansel, Owner North Shore Expeditions
